Bengaluru/New Delhi: The Election Commission started counting of votes for the Karnataka elections at 8am today. Polling was held on Saturday, May 12 for 222 of Karnataka's 224 assembly constituencies.
Exit polls have predicted a tight contest between the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and a hung assembly, which means no party gets a majority. If that happens, the Janata Dal Secular led by former prime minister H.D. Deve Gowda will be seen as kingmaker.
No party has retained power in Karnataka since 1985, when the then Janata Dal formed government under Ramakrishna Hegde for a second consecutive term.
The Congress, which has ruled the state for the past five years hopes to change that statistic, with chief minister Siddaramiah hoping for a second straight term in the top post. At stake is the last big state it holds.
The BJP, which has projected BS Yeddyurappa for chief minister, wants to wrest back from the Congress the only southern state it has ever been in power in. The campaign for Karnataka was high-pitched, with all parties pulling out their top guns. Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the BJP's campaign with multiple election rallies as did Congress president Rahul Gandhi for his party.
Here are the Karnataka election results live updates
